Those sure are famous words for those of us who have children in school ..... SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER. Whether you home school, send your child to private school, or send your child to public school, parents and students alike anticipate saying these words at the end of each school year. Typically everyone says these words with extreme excitement and joy - and a little shouting to go along with the phrase. But I must admit that I say them with a little tear in my eye and sadness in my heart because the means that another year has passed in our lives and that we celebrate the fact that my children are another year older.
When I taught school (and I wasn't even a mom yet), I remember having a similar feeling knowing that I wouldn't see these same students again in this same setting - each day in my classroom, sitting in that same desk - and that the time I had with them to influence their lives was coming to an end. Even though the time with my own children is not coming to an end, I am reminded that the time with my children is so very precious and that I must cherish the moments that I do have with them. It is so important to make special memories with them and to invest in them. Eighteen years seems like such a long time, but now that my oldest is not 16, all I can think of is - OH MY GOODNESS, I ONLY HAVE 2 MORE YEARS!!!
I feel so blessed to have a lifetime to be a mother, but I do realize that our moments of influence become so limited as they grow and mature. I continue to be so thankful that we don't parent alone but that Rusty and I have our Heavenly Father to provide us with parenting guidance and wisdom. I was talking with a life-long family friend last weekend and shared with her the importance of having our children in church. Even though our children are not adults yet, without doubt we see NOW some fruits of our having them at church with us. They learn sooooo much about love for the Lord, love for others, serving the Lord, respect for others, loving God's word, respect for the Lord, getting along with others, ........the list goes on and on and on......
Now that SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER, make special memories with your family all summer long. Hey - and for you parents of preschoolers - hold on tight!!!! It goes by way too quickly.
See you next week at VBS!!!!!
Love to you ALL!!!
